Luntz Focus Group: ‘Very Clear’ Who Won GOP Debate

Frank Luntz, one the nation’s most prominent pollsters and frequent contributor to the Fox News Channel, suggested on Fox News’ Kelly File that his focus group was “very clear” about who won the GOP presidential debate last night (January 14) in South Carolina. The results may surprise you, especially given all of the attention the exchange between Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been receiving in the media over the past 12 hours.

Watch the clip from Fox News below:

The results from the focus group are a little surprising. While I put absolutely no stock in the whole “Ted Cruz can’t run for president” argument, I do think Trump’s explanation of his concerns is actually one of the best explanations I’ve heard so far. Essentially, Trump says, “I don’t care if you are or aren’t eligible, but the Democrats will sue you either way and cause a huge political firestorm” (I’m paraphrasing, not directly quoting).

Trump is probably right. Many Democrats would likely make that argument, and I think that concern is the best of the “natural born citizen” arguments against Cruz. However, I think it’s still a pretty weak claim in the grant scheme of things, and I doubt there’s much for Cruz to be concerned about.
