Incredible Number of U.S. Colleges Now Offer Socialistic ‘Social Justice’ Degrees
A new report issued by College Fix reporter Toni Airaksinen has found that more than 100 colleges across the country are now offering academic programs (minors, majors, graduate degrees, concentrations, certificates, etc.) in “social justice” fields.
“The Fix found at least 64 American colleges that offer minors in social justice or a substantially similar field, such as social justice leadership,” Airaksinen reported. “At least 18 offer four-year degrees in the field, and at least 15 offer master’s degrees.”
As I noted recently at The Blaze, an analysis of some of the coursework required by these academic programs shows just how leftwing the whole “social justice” movement has become.
For instance, at Rutgers University, a public school in New Jersey, undergrads can minor in “social justice.” One of the courses offered, “Practicing Social Justice,” requires students actually participate in leftist causes.
According to the course’s description, “Practicing Social Justice” will introduce “students to diverse practices of social justice activism including grassroots organizing, labor organizing, political organizing, and transnational organizing. Readings about social change efforts are combined with student participation in community mobilizations, labor organizing efforts, political campaigns, and transnational social movement and NGO activism.”
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Leftists have been dominating college campuses for the better part of the past 60 years, and their efforts have most certainly paid off.
How can people who support freedom battle this kind of indoctrination? For starters, pro-liberty parents need to stop financing leftist movements by sending their kids to the truly far-left colleges. Ninety percent or more of colleges are liberal, at the very least, but some are much worse than others. If your child goes or wants to go to a college that is openly leftist, don’t pay for it! Conservatives, to some extent, can’t blame the lions for eating their children when they send their kids into the lions’ den.
Second, conservative parents should encourage their children to go to pro-liberty, free-market colleges, such as Hillsdale, Regent University, Liberty University, etc.
Third, conservatives, especially wealthy ones, need to stop giving their money to public colleges and liberal private colleges and instead invest in conservative schools, including in the creation of new conservative colleges.
Fourth, conservatives need to start more right-leaning colleges that don’t have a religious affiliation. Although Christian schools are wonderful, not everyone is a Christian, and conservative colleges that don’t promote religion could go a long way to providing pro-liberty parents with better options for their children.
There are, of course, many other things that could and should be done to reverse this immense problem, but these four ideas could serve as a good starting point for a more comprehensive strategy moving forward.
